Stress and acupuncture
For many of us, stress is part of everyday life. Fortunately, acupuncture treatments can help us regain our composure.
When we are exposed to a stressful or dangerous situation, our body triggers a cascade of physiological and hormonal reactions. These have allowed, historically, man to ensure his survival in the face of dangers in his environment, such as a wild animal, a forest fire or a violent storm. From this point of view, the stress was beneficial.
In our current societies, the causes of stress have changed a lot. They are many and varied and can come from, for example, an overloaded schedule, interpersonal conflicts or financial problems. The consequences of a state of stress, in the long term, can be serious for our organism. Here are examples:
- Cardiovascular diseases (heart disorders and strokes),
- Weakened immune system (difficulty countering viruses, susceptibility to infections, new allergies),
- Digestive problems and appetite disorders (heartburn, bloating, acid reflux, constipation or diarrhea, slow bowel activity),
- Sleep disorders and anxiety disorders.
Becoming aware of our level of stress should lead us to look for ways to reduce it. These means may differ from person to person. Some will opt for meditation or yoga, breathing techniques or listening to relaxing music, while others will prefer sports.
Acupuncture to better manage stress
Acupuncture is a very effective method for reducing stress, because from the first treatment, there is a release of endorphins and neurotransmitters which act on the body by soothing it. For example, the heart rate, which accelerates in the presence of stress, returns to normal, breathing is calmer and deeper and the muscles relax. There are also some specific acupuncture points that can achieve these results.
The number of treatments required to generally feel more relaxed may vary from person to person. Many patients will see their sleep improve, will better manage their emotions and their digestion will be facilitated. These are just a few examples of the many benefits obtained by lowering stress levels through acupuncture.
